Board of Zoning Appeals

COMPOSITION: (Summarized from State Code and the Roanoke County Charter)

To consist of five (5) members, appointed by the Board of Supervisors.

Term of office shall be for five years.

Appointments to fill vacancies shall be only for the unexpired portion of the term.
Members may be reappointed to succeed themselves.

DUTIES: (Summarized from State Code)

Hear and decide appeals from any order, requirement, decision or determination made by an administrative officer in the administration or enforcement of this article or of any ordinance adopted pursuant thereto.

Authorize upon appeal or original application in special cases such variance from the terms of the ordinance as will not be contrary to the public interest, when owing to special conditions a literal enforcement of the provisions will result in unnecessary hardship; provided that the spirit of the ordinance shall be observed and substantial justice done.

Hear and decide appeals from the decisions of the zoning administrator or applications for special exceptions. Hear and decide applications for interpretation of the district map where there is any uncertainty as to the location of a district boundary.

Third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Meeting Room at the Roanoke County Administration Center, 5204 Bernard Drive, Roanoke, VA 24018.
