Concealed Weapons Permits

The purpose of this information is to better inform the general public of procedural matters. Nothing contained herein is intended to advise anyone as to legal remedies for a particular circumstance. Circuit Court Clerks and their Deputy Clerks cannot render legal advice.


Concealed handgun applications are available from the Roanoke County Circuit Court, 305 East Main Street, Salem, Virginia 24153 (2nd floor of the Courthouse, Room 200).  You may download the application from the  Virginia Department of State Police website.

There are multiple steps in the application process. Information about each step in the application process will be provided with the application. To ensure that your application is processed without delay, please read and follow all instructions carefully.

FOR APPLICATIONS FILED IN THE ROANOKE COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

1. The fee of $50.00 needs to accompany the completed application. If payment is by check, please make payable to Steven A. McGraw, Sr., Clerk.  You can bring the completed application to our office with a photo id and we can verify your signature OR you can have your signature notarized and mail the completed application to our office.

2.  The court shall require proof that the applicant has demonstrated competence with a handgun and the applicant may demonstrate such competence by providing documentation as set out by VA Code 18.2-308(G).  A photocopy of a certificate of completion of any of the courses or classes; an affidavit from the instructor, school, club, organization, or group that conducted or taught such course or class attesting to the completion of the course or class by the applicant; or a copy of any document which shows completion of the course or class or evidences participation in firearms competition shall constitute evidence of qualification under this subsection.

3. The Court may require you to be present for a hearing.

4. If the permit is granted, the Clerk's Office will mail your permit to you.

In order to maintain your authorization, applications for permit renewal should be submitted to the Court at least 45 days prior to expiration of the current permit.

Once filed with the Circuit Court, the final review process may take up to 45 days. You will be notified by mail whether your application was approved or denied.
