Electronic Voting Machines

In 2003, Roanoke County retired the old lever voting machines, as mandated by the Help America Vote Act, and replaced them with electronic touchscreen voting machines.

You can download WinVote Instructions in PDF format.

Following are instructions for voting on the WINvote machine:

Step One

Read the ballot title and instructions.

WinVote Console

Touch the  Touch Here button button on the screen when ready to begin voting.

Step Two

To make your selection, touch the name of the candidate that appears on the ballot or the “write-in” box to write in the name of a candidate that is not on the ballot.  (The “write-in option is only available if write-ins are allowed for that office.)

WinVote Ballot Screen

If you chose a candidate, a red X will appear and the box will be highlighted in red.

If you chose “write-in” a keyboard will appear.  Type in the name of the candidate that you wish to write in.  DO NOT write in the name of a candidate that is already listed on the ballot for that office.  Touch the NEXT button and you will return to the ballot page.  Your write-in choice and a red X will appear.  The box will also be highlighted in red.

To change or cancel your selection, touch the box again.

Touch the NEXT button to advance to the next page of the ballot or the BACK button to go back to the previous page.

Step Three

Review the summary page.
