Fireworks Safety
The Roanoke County Fire Marshal's Office would like to remind citizens that Virginia’s laws prohibit the use of consumer fireworks for private use with the following exceptions: sparklers, fountains, pharaohs, serpents, and caps.
It is important to realize that consumer fireworks can also be dangerous, es
pecially to children. What seems like an innocent firework, such as sparkler, can reach temperatures above 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and can cause serious burns, fire, or worse.
The best safety tip is to leave the fireworks to the professionals. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals. However, if you are going to use legal fireworks, such as sparklers or showers of sparks, here is what you should know:
TOP 5 FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS
-
Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
-
Adults should always supervise fireworks activities. Parents often don’t realize that there are many injuries from sparklers to children under five. Sparklers burn at temperatures of over 1,200 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
-
Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully functioned.
-
Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
-
Light one item at a time, then move back quickly.
For more information or questions regarding fireworks safety, call the Safety Line at (540) 777-8718.
