BASIC COMPUTER

How to Use the Mouse and Keyboard
An introduction to the mouse and keyboard. In this class, you will learn where the important keys are and what they do. You will also learn how to hold the mouse, how to move the pointer and how to click. This is a basic class for people who are not experienced on the computer.  This is not a class on how to type but rather to familiarize you with the major keys and how they work.  Typing experience or experience with a computer is not required. 

Keyboard Shortcuts
In this class, you will learn how to navigate your computer using keyboard shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts are programmed keystrokes (individually or pressed simultaneously in combination with another key) used to execute commands. Move through Windows, Word, and Internet Explorer using the keyboard only. This class is for users who are comfortable using the keyboard.

Computer Basics
In this introductory course, we will cover the basic parts of a computer and learn what the main programs are that are used on the computer.  You'll also learn how to open and save to floppy disks, CDs, and the hard drive. We'll conclude the class with the various features of printing.
Prerequisite:  How to Use the Mouse and Keyboard.

Introduction to Windows XP
An introduction to the operating system that runs many of our computers. In this class, we will learn how to perform basic computing tasks, such as how to find and use the control panel, create shortcuts for the programs in your computer, change your screen saver and "wallpaper", create new folders in My Documents, and more. You must be comfortable working with the computer, mouse, and the basics of Microsoft Word.

Organizing Your Computer
In this class, you will learn how to organize what you save. This will include how to create folders, how to put documents in these folders, and how to delete unwanted files. We will be using Windows XP, but most of the tasks will be similar in other versions of Microsoft's Operating Systems. You must have some experience saving documents to take this class.

INTERNET

Surfing the Internet
This is a beginner's class in the use of the World Wide Web.  You'll learn basic internet terminology and how to navigate the internet using Microsoft's Internet Explorer.  In addition to basic navigation, we will cover techniques for optimal use of search engines and evaluating online sources for reliable information.

Email I
You’ll learn how to read, delete, compose, reply to, and forward e-mail messages as well as manage your address book. You must be experienced at using the mouse and familiar with the basic keyboard keys to take this hands-on class.  We will use Google Gmail.

Email II
We will cover more advanced topics such as attaching a document, saving a draft, and sending one email to many people at one time.  You must know how to read, compose, and reply to email to take this class.  We will use Google Gmail.

Google Your World
Google has more to offer than the average search engine.  In this class we will teach you how to generate maps and driving directions to almost any location with Google Maps.  Learn how to find restaurants, stores, and more near a given address.  Then step back for a satellite’s view of the world with Google Earth.  Just click your mouse on any part of the globe and see where it takes you.  You may never be lost again.  No experience required, but typing, mouse skills, and some familiarity with the Internet is helpful.

Security on a Shoestring
Learn how to protect your computer with free anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware programs.  You'll also learn a number of other computer security tips and how to keep your private information safe.

MICROSOFT PRODUCTS

Intro to Access 2007 pt. 1
This is the first part of our introduction to Access 2007. This class will introduce you to the program and get you started with creating a new database. We will focus on the steps of creating and working with Tables. We will also cover the basics of establishing relationships between tables. This class is for users who feel comfortable working with Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft Excel 2007. 

Intro to Access 2007 pt. 2
This is the second part of our introduction to Access 2007. In this class we will cover the basics of using Filters, Queries and Forms. This class is for people who have had Intro to Access 2007 pt. 1 and feel comfortable with gaining more advanced skills.

Intro to Access 2007 pt. 3
Our final introductory class for Access 2007. In this class we will cover the basics of creating and printing Reports. We will also see how to use reports to generate labels. This class is for those who are very comfortable with the Access interface and have an understanding of the contents of Intro to Access parts 1 & 2.

Excel I (2007)
A beginning approach to spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. We'll cover the basic features of Microsoft Excel including: entering data, formatting, and basic mathematical calculations and functions using a worksheet. This class is for users who feel comfortable working within the Windows environment and using the mouse.

Excel II (2007)
An intermediate level Excel class.  We'll cover Excel functions including:  headers, linking spreadsheets, grouping spreadsheets, using the function wizard, and inserting charts. This class is for people who have had Excel I and feel comfortable with gaining more advanced skills.

Excel III (2007)
An advanced level Excel class.  Building on our intermediate class, we will cover linking spreadsheets, Using Functions, creating and customizing a chart, transposing cells, and getting started with macros.  This class is for people who are very comfortable with the Excel interface and have an understanding of the contents of our beginner and intermediate Excel classes.

Word I (2007)
An introduction to word processing using Microsoft Word 2007. This is the new version of Word that is radically different from previous versions.  In this class, you'll learn the basic features of Microsoft Word including creating, opening and saving a document, inserting text, correcting mistakes, and using spell check.  This class is for beginners who feel comfortable with and capable of using the keyboard and mouse.

Word II (2007)
The next step in word processing using Microsoft Word 2007. This is the new version of Word that is radically different from previous versions. In this class, you will learn how to highlight and format text, rearrange text (cut, copy and paste), use page setup, create bulleted and numbered lists, add borders and shading, use Word templates and use the Research tool.  This class is for users who feel comfortable working with both the computer and the basics of the program. If you do not feel comfortable with these things, please take the "Word I” class first.

Word III (2007)
In this class about Microsoft Word 2007, you will learn how to draw lines and arrows, use AutoShapes, insert pictures, text boxes, clip art, graphs and WordArt, and use the special formatting features on the Drawing Toolbar. You must be comfortable working with the computer and mouse and have an intermediate skill level in Microsoft Word. 

Resume Building with Word 2007
This is a class teaching the Microsoft Word 2007 skills you will need to create a resume.  We will cover creating bulleted lists, drawing lines, changing text size and style, and centering,  You must have experience using Microsoft Word 2007 to take this class.  This is not a class on how to write a resume, but instead it is about the Word skills you can use to create one.

Creating Holiday Letters
Using Microsoft Word, you will create a holiday letter. You will learn how to apply borders, manipulate fonts, insert graphics and photos, create a mailing list and perform a mail merge. You must be comfortable with a mouse and keyboard and know Microsoft Word basics. This class is for intermediate computer users.

PowerPoint (2007)
Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 is a useful tool in creating professional looking presentations and slide shows. In this class, you will learn how to create presentations, work with slides, set up and run slide shows, and print slides, handouts and presentations. You must be comfortable working with the computer and mouse and you must have an intermediate to advanced skill level in other Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, or Publisher).

Publisher (2007)
Microsoft Publisher is a program used to create professional-looking posters, flyers, and brochures. In this class, you will create a basic flyer. You will learn to insert text boxes, use clip art, and apply borders and background colors. You must be familiar with the mouse, keyboard, and Microsoft Office in order to take this class.

JOB SEARCH

Online Job Searching
An introduction to job searching online. In this class, you will learn how to search various online job databases such as Monster.com and HotJobs.com. Additionally, you will learn how to search online classifieds and government websites. You must be able to use the mouse, know the main keys on the computer keyboard and have taken the First Search class.

Online Job Applications Plus
A continuation of Online Job Searching. In this class, you will learn how to create a resume using Microsoft Word 2007 templates. Then you will learn how to fill out an online application, upload your resume and submit your application and resume online. You must be able to use the mouse, know the main keys on the computer keyboard and have taken the Online Job Searching class or the Word I class.

Email for Job Seekers
Are you searching for a job online, but don't have an email address you need to apply for one? This is the class for you. If you have an email address, this is not the class for you. In the class, you will sign up for your own account and learn how to send and receive messages. You must be able to use a computer mouse to take this class.

INTERNET FUN

Blogging & Tweeting  
A blog is a journal you keep on the Internet. It can be used to socialize, network, share news, photos and information, connect with friends and family, market a product or service and a whole lot more.  In this class, you will learn how to create an account with Blogger and Twitter, post and edit blog entries, customize your blog, search for other blogs and connect with other bloggers. You must be comfortable with the keyboard and mouse and have experience using the Internet.

Introduction to Facebook (a program that helps you connect with friends)
This class is for those who do not yet have a Facebook account.  You will set up an account, add security features, learn how to post messages to your wall, search for people, and upload photographs to your account.  You must have an email address and must know your email username and password to take this class.  You may also bring pictures (on a CD, USB drive, or in a camera if you have a cord to connect the camera to the computer) to put on Facebook.

Free Stuff on the Web 
You may not know that there are many free programs available on the Internet. In this class, we will learn to find, download, and use free software for managing photos, online maps, keeping track of what books you've read or own, and more. You must be comfortable with the mouse and keyboard, and have experience using the Internet. 
 
Gaming for Seniors
Learn how to find and play computer games! Besides being fun, computer gaming can have a lot of side benefits. You will improve your mouse and keyboard skills. It will introduce you to new websites and improve your internet navigation skills. Hand-eye coordination and memory are exercised. Familiarity with the mouse, keyboard, and the internet isn't absolutely necessary, but highly recommended.

Share your Calendar and Documents using Google
With Google Calendar, we will go over how to add and share documents, and how to synchronize your calendar with an iPhone.  With Google Docs, we will explore how to create and share documents, and how to collaborate on a project.  You must be an intermediate level internet user to take this class.  We suggest that you create a Gmail account before taking the class.

Website Creation for the Beginner
Freewebs.com is a useful tool in creating your own personal website.  In this class you will learn how to set up an account, create the website, add pages, change the look of the website, and insert text, links, and pictures.  You must be comfortable working with the computer and mouse and you must feel comfortable navigating the internet.

DIGITAL PHOTOS

Digital Photos with Picasa
We will be using Google's Picasa  program to edit pictures by cropping, straightening, eliminating red eye, sharpening, adjusting lighting, and applying special effects.  You must be comfortable using Microsoft Windows.  This class is for intermediate computer users.  

Sharing Digital Photos: how to use the Kodak Gallery website
This class is for intermediate computer users. We will create an account, upload and share pictures and discuss how to order pictures online. You are welcome to bring either a digital camera with pictures on it and a USB cord (the camera won't help without the cord) or a CD or flash drive with pictures on it. We have no way of getting pictures from memory cards. If you do not have digital pictures to bring, we will provide pictures. You will also need an email address.

Organize Your Digital Photos
Learn how to access and organize your photos on the web. In this class, we'll demonstrate accessing photos on a digital camera, loading the photos onto the computer, and using the digital photos in emails and on the web. Basic computer and Internet skills are needed for this class.

Photo Manipulation with Paint.net
Paint.net is free photo manipulation software similar to Photoshop. It can be used to simply enhance or retouch a photograph or to create an image composite from multiple images. In this class, you will learn how to navigate the interface, use selection, correction, clone and paint tools, add, duplicate and manipulate layers, adjust hues and textures, and use special-effect filters. Prerequisite: Word III and Photo Editing (with Picasa, Picnik, or Kodak) or comparable skill level.

LIBRARY DATABASES

FindItVA and Infotrac
An introduction to the FindItVa and Infotrac databases. Find It Virginia is a collection of databases that provide access to resources such as newspapers, magazine and journal articles, and books such as encyclopedias. Infotrac is a one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics. You must be comfortable with the mouse and keyboard, and have experience using the Internet.

Search the Ancestry Website
You will learn about search features and functionality, and the print/save/sharing features of this web site.  We will search the census and other records.  Bring some names to research including birth and death dates if you have them.  You need to be an experienced internet user to take this class.

Genealogy from Home
Learn how to research your family history from home using the Heritage Quest website, Familysearch.org (The Latter-day Saints web site), and other online resources.  Bring names of some ancestors to research.  You must be comfortable using the internet to take this class.

Magazine and Reference Databases 
This class is an introduction to the variety of magazine and reference databases available through the Roanoke County Public Library website. Databases include ReferenceUSA and Mitchell's Automotive Repair. You must be comfortable with the mouse and keyboard, and have experience using the Internet.

Test Preparation That Works
A class on how to use the libraries web source for practice tests (LearnATest) on a wide variety of subjects including the ASVAB, ACT, and GED, AP, GRE, MCAT and many others. We will cover how to register for the service and use the tests. You must be comfortable using the Internet to take this class. To get the most out of this class, you need to have an email address.
