Library Card Information

library cardIt's easy to get a library card.  If you are a resident of Virginia you can receive your free library card from any Roanoke Valley Public Library or Bookmobile or online.

In the library, ask for a registration form at the Circulation Desk and fill it out. Give the registration form to a staff member at the Desk and show identification that includes your current address (driver's license, check, bank statement, utility bill, etc). Your library card is issued immediately and is yours to use at any of the public libraries in the Roanoke Valley.

Online, click on the library card registration link below. Complete and submit the form. Your card will be mailed to you. Click here for an online registration form (Must use Internet Explorer).

  • Children 12 years of age and under may get a library card with the signature and identification of a parent or guardian.
  • Temporary cards for out-of-state visitors are available for a fee.  Ask at the Circulation Desk for more details.
  • Cards are renewed every two years.
  • There is a $1.00 replacement charge for lost or damaged cards.

  • Items may be returned to any Roanoke Valley Public Library, no matter where you borrowed them.
  • With some exceptions, most items may be renewed twice.
  • You may renew items in person, by telephone or by computer.
  • If you have questions, please ask.
  • If the item you are looking for is not available, it may be requested and sent to any Roanoke Valley Public Library for you to pick up.
  • Some popular books have waiting lists and any library can add your name to the list.
  • If the item you are looking for is not in the computer catalog, arrangements may be made through interlibrary loan to borrow it from another library.

Interlibrary Loan Information

If you are unable to find the materials you need at the Roanoke Valley Libraries, try Interlibrary Loan (ILL). ILL allows you to borrow books, magazine articles, books on tape and other material from libraries outside the valley. A charge of $2.00 will be charged for each interlibrary loan.
