Crime Prevention

The Crime Prevention Office offers several programs to the citizens and businesses in Roanoke County.

The Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch programs offers active participation of residents and businesses in Roanoke County to reduce crime in neighborhoods within the County.

A Citizens Academy is offered twice a year for citizens to learn more about the Police Department and its functions.

In partnership with Roanoke City, an Advanced Citizen's Academy is held once a year. This program offers an in-depth look at both police departments through "hands on" participation.

Citizen's are encouraged to have their bicycles registered in the Department's Bicycle Registration program.  A non-removable decal in placed on the bicycle and identification and ownership information is entered in the database.

McGruff the Crime Dog is available upon request to visit schools, churches, businesses or other public events to assist in the education of Crime Prevention.

The Roanoke County Police Department is working with other area law enforcement agencies in implementing "Project Lifesaver".  Project Lifesaver is a partnership with local law enforcement and families of Alzheimer's disease and other related disorders such as Down Syndrome and Autism.  Specially trained officer's respond to the scene of a missing victim and use electronic technology to assist in locating the victim in a minimal amount of time.
