About the Fleet Service Center

(September 2009) The Fleet Service Center is scheduled to be substantially complete by mid to late September with a projected occupancy set for mid to late October. The building's exterior shell is complete and 100% dried-in now that all the overhead and service doors have been installed.

Exterior site work is progressing in spite of August's wet weather, with concrete aprons and curbing being installed. Topsoil is being spread around the building and parking lots and roadways are being paved the first week of September.

Interior finishes, including cabinetry, doors, plumbing, lighting and flooring are nearly done. The bulk of the HVAC has been installed and installation of the waste oil and other fluid systems is still ongoing.

(October 2008) - The new County Fleet Service Center (FSC) located at 5235 Hollins Road, on a 9 acre site in North County will have a finished square footage of 23,600 sf. and contain eight light vehicle bays, eight heavy vehicle bays, a parts room, tire storage, administrative offices and customer waiting area.

This state of the art vehicle service facility will be a LEED Certified “green building,”  with sustainable features that include: extensive natural lighting, computerized light and HVAC control, water efficient landscaping, 40% reduction in domestic water use, white roof for reduced heat island effect, recycled content building materials and many more. All of the vehicle waste oil will be recycled on site for use in heating the building which will dramatically reduce utility costs.

The facility will be equipped to service all County and Western Virginia Water Authority vehicles, from the longest ladder truck used by Fire and Rescue to the diminutive hybrids used by Real Estate Assessment. The site will be the location of the 100 ft. broadcast tower formerly located at the old Public Safety Building and will be used for wireless communications and future co-location of other services. The project Architect is Spectrum Design and the General Contractor is Thor Inc.

As of September 30, all site clearing and most of the rough grading had been completed, erosion sediment control and temporary storm water detention systems are in place.  All building foundations have been poured, exterior block wall construction has commenced as has plumbing and electrical rough-in work. Grading for the new main entrance on Hollins Road is nearly done and the 175,000 gallon underground storm water detention system is 2/3 complete.

The estimated date of completion, assuming cooperative weather conditions, is June 27, 2009 and actual opening for business likely to occur in mid-July.
