The Commonwealth of Virginia has a long and proud history of providing citizens with full access to records maintained by public officials. The public records room of the Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court has maintained this history since 1838 by providing the technology and some limited staff support by which any citizen may search.  These records include:

Real Estate Related Documents

Land Records  (Deeds, Surveys, Plats, Land Tax Records)  

Financing Statements      Judgments     Estates and Wills 

Other Public Documents

Marriage Licenses     Fictitious Name Certificates & Partnership Certificates

Notary Public Commissions

Criminal Division Cases/Hearings

Complaint /Wrongful Death/Driving Privileges/Concealed Weapons Permits/Name Changes/Church Trustee/Etc

The Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court is responsible for recording documents in the above categories and maintaining them in accordance with state law and in compliance with microfilming standards. The public records room is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays. Copies of records are available for $.50 per copied page. Copies may be certified by a deputy clerk for $2 additional for each copy of the entire document.

Each Circuit Court Clerk's Office in Virginia holds only those records pertaining to actions or filings in the jurisdiction of that Circuit Court. For example, only those marriage licenses issued in Roanoke County are recorded in Roanoke County. Particularly when researching land, estate and will records, you may find that the trail of records flows from one locality to another.
