Bulk Garbage and Brush Collection
Bulk and brush are materials that will not normally fit in the container. Bulk includes items such as furniture, appliances, mattresses, box springs, water heaters, bags, boxes, etc. Brush is a large pile of tree cuttings, shrubbery clippings, or other loose yard waste (not leaves) that will not fit in your container. If you have a question as to whether or not an item can be disposed of via bulk/brush collection, please call 387-6225.

Bulk and Brush Pick Up Schedule
Bulk and Brush are picked up on alternating weeks according to an established pick up schedule. For more information, see Find Your Collection Day and see if your street is a designated A Week or B Week. A running calendar of A Week and B Week can be found on the County Calendar at Current Bulk Pick Up A/B Week.
Important Bulk and Brush Guidelines:
-
Bulk items (furniture, appliances, boxes, bags, etc.) should not exceed a pickup truck load per collection.
-
Brush piles can be no larger than a pickup truck load (6'x6'x6'). Brush can be no more than 12 inches in diameter and 6 feet in length. Small stumps of the same size (12 inches in diameter) or less that are free of dirt, rock, and other debris can also be collected.
-
Place the materials at the curb no earlier than the Saturday before the collection day.
-
No materials from contracted jobs or land-clearing will be collected.
-
Small amounts of home owner generated building material may be collected during bulk collection. The material must be no more than a 6'x6'x6' pile (a pickup truck load) and must not contain any roofing shingles, asphalt, brick, or concrete.
-
Crossties will not be collected via bulk/brush collection.
-
Landscape timbers that are no longer than 3 feet in length may be collected.
-
Only four (4) tires, without the rims, per collection.
-
Packing peanuts should be contained in a box or sealed plastic bag to prevent the styrofoam from blowing around the street.
-
Rugs/carpet should be rolled in lengths not to exceed 6'.
-
Paint can only be collected if it is latex or water based and completely dried in the can. Residents may mix sawdust, sand, or kitty litter with wet paint to aid in the drying process.
-
Please either tape and wrap glass (mirrors, windows, shower doors) or break the glass ahead of time and double-bag the shards. This practice has two benefits: collectors avoid injury due to broken glass and glass shards that spray out of the truck do not lay in the road for vehicles to run over.
-
Brush cuttings and tree limbs resulting from commercial tree trimming operations (contractor/commercial waste) will not be collected.
-
Debris waste and tree stumps larger than 12 inches in diamater will not be collected.
-
Grass clippings and leaves must be bagged.
-
Any material that may be wind blown must be bagged.
Uncollectible Bulk Items
Certain items cause considerable damage to our refuse trucks and are unable to be collected. Dirt, sod, rocks, concrete, bricks, metal, and large amounts of debris from construction, remodeling and/or demolition may not be placed in the container or collected by the bulk/brush vehicles. These items will damage the garbage trucks. Do not put anything flammable, toxic, or hazardous in the container. DO NOT PUT HOT ASHES OR CHARCOAL IN THE AUTOMATED CONTAINER. If your container is damaged due to fire or misuse, you will be responsible for replacing the container at your own expense.
Roanoke County does not collect bulk or brush that results from contracted jobs - meaning any job done for hire.
The County will not collect bulk or brush from commercial establishments, firewood larger than 12" in diameter, hazardous material, or dead animals.
