The Roanoke County Police Department strives to provide the citizens of Roanoke County with the best possible police services.  The department does this through many successful community programs and a dedicated workforce.

Chief  LavinderOn November 7, 1989, the citizens of Roanoke County voted to establish a County police department.  This mandate was the beginning of an eight month transition that would end with the establishment of the Roanoke County Police Department.  The transition from a Sheriff’s Office into two separate law enforcement agencies was complete on June 30, 1990.

On July 1, 1990 the Roanoke County Police Department assumed law enforcement activities.

The Roanoke County Police Department is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.  The Department has maintained national accreditation since November 1997.

The Department has an assigned strength of 140 sworn officers and 13 civilian support staff positions.  These employees do their best to provide the citizens of Roanoke County excellent police service.
