Roanoke County appreciates your patience with the implementation of temporary changes to County operations and services. We strongly encourage the public to utilize the contact information listed below and make an appointment prior to visiting. 

Departments will make every attempt to provide services over the phone or via email. Refer to the contact information below.

Department of Social Services

To inquire about Social Services, we provide the following options:

  • The lobby is closed to the public through July 2nd. 
  • The drive-thru in the back of the building is available for in-person service or by calling to schedule an in-person appointment.
  • The lobby will reopen on Monday, July 6, from 10 am - 3 pm only. Social Services is requesting that clients wear a face-covering when entering the building or when meeting with staff. 
  • The DSS Office is located at 220 E. Main Street, Salem, VA 24153.
  • If you need to apply for benefits you can apply online at www.Commonhelp.Virginia.Gov or by phone at 1-855-635-4370.
  • To drop off verifications, please utilize the drive-thru or the dropbox in the rear of the building.

To inquire about voting, we provide the following options:

  • Request an absentee ballot, update your voter registration record, or find your precinct and polling place by visiting
  • The Roanoke County Department of Elections is located at the Craig Center, 900 Chestnut Street, Vinton, VA 24179.
  • Office hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.  
  • The building is closed to the public until July 6th, but curbside service is available by appointment.

To inquire about Library Services, we provide the following options:

  • Books may be returned to receptacles placed outside of each library. Drive-thrus are available at Glenvar, South County, and Vinton.
  • Curbside material pick up is available at all locations:

           South County, Glenvar, Hollins, & Vinton: Monday-Saturday 10:00 am-5:00 pm

           Mt. Pleasant: Tuesday 1:00 pm-5:00 pm; Saturday 10:00 am-2:00 pm

           Bent Mountain: Wednesday 10:00 am-2:00 pm; Friday 1:00 pm-5:00 pm

  • Patrons can put items on hold via the online portal or by or by calling their library during the hours listed above.
  • We have increased our electronic resources, including books on Overdrive and CloudLibrary, and online databases. Patrons can sign up for an eLibrary Card on our website to gain access to our Virtual Library 24/7.

Parks, Recreation and Tourism

To inquire about Parks, Recreation and Tourism, we provide the following options:

  • Green Ridge Recreation Center is open Monday through Thursday 6:00 am to 8:00 pm,  Friday 6:00 am to 7:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday Noon to 5:00 pm.
  • Brambleton Center is open evenings and Saturday mornings for fitness classes only.
  • Shelter, park and athletic field rentals are available at this time. Please call Public Service Center at (540) 387-6078 or book online.

Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection (RCACP)

To inquire about adoption or a lost pet, we provide the following options:

Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office / Roanoke County-Salem Jail

No self-defense classes are planned at this time due to social distancing. Firearms safety classes will resume soon. All community outreach requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Workforce programs will continue with Parks and Recreation outside venues only and also continue at the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection (RCACP). Weekend trash pickup will resume on June 13.

In addition, the Sheriff’s Office informs the public of other changes to services from the Sheriff’s Office and at the Roanoke County / Salem Jail:

  • The lobby of the Roanoke County / Salem Jail will open on June 15 with all services provided.
  • Visits can be made online through ICS and off-site phone services are not impacted. Questions regarding phones or visits can be directed to Sgt. States at (540) 283-3131. 
  • Video visitation from the jail lobby to inmates at the Western Virginia Regional Jail can still be made online. On June 15, the video visitation in the lobby will be available but with less video units due to social distancing.
  • Deposits to inmate accounts can be made online or through the mail. Anyone with questions about inmate accounts can contact Deputy Arrington at (540) 283-3128. The lobby kiosk will be available starting June 15 to make deposits to inmate accounts.
  • On June 15 fingerprinting services will become available. Those asking to be fingerprinted must wear a face mask. Persons needing fingerprints taken may also contact the Virginia State Police to inquire if they are still providing this service. 
  • Weekender / Delayed Reporting Effective May 21, 2020: All persons in the Weekender / Delayed Reporting program should call (540) 283-3162 and speak to a deputy. Any person scheduled to report to the Roanoke County/Salem Jail between May 18 and June 11 will need to report to the jail lobby on June 12 at 7:00 PM.
  • Courts - Persons with court cases or other business in the courthouse are requested not to bring other persons with them, as they will have to wait outside the courthouse. Young children will be an exception if there is no means to provide childcare.
