Overview

The Roanoke County Police, Fire and Rescue and Sheriff's Department will hold its Public Safety Academy beginning on February 19, 2019. The goal of the Public Safety Academy is to educate citizens on why and how our agencies carry out our missions while working together as a team.

About the Roanoke County Public Safety Academy

Citizens will learn about everything related to public safety in Roanoke County. Police topics will include patrol, budget, community service officers, school resource officers, driving range, use of force, traffic unit, firing range, K9, S.W.A.T, VICE, criminal investigations, evidence collection, academy tour, polygraph and building clearing.

The Sheriff's Department will cover the jail history, jail tour, jury selection, court security, civil process, criminal law, E.R.T, clerk of court, services, and A.V.O.I.D self-defense.

Fire and Rescue Department topics include the following:

  • Apparatus and hose streams
  • CPAT
  • CPR and AED certification
  • EMS
  • Fire Marshall
  • Fire system overview
  • Haul back systems
  • Hazmat
  • Inspections
  • Investigations
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Public education
  • Technical rescue

There will also be presentations on the Roanoke County Emergency Communications Center, Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and a tour of the Western Virginia Regional Jail. The Public Safety Academy will meet every Tuesday beginning on February 19, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Please see the current schedule below.

Who Can Attend?

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older and no longer in High School.
  • You do not have to be a Roanoke County Resident in order to attend.
