The Treasurer's office is responsible for the billing and collection of all current and delinquent Real Estate Taxes.
This office is also responsible for updating and maintaining mailing addresses, processing payments from settlement companies and attorneys for Real Estate closings and updating lending information on the property record.
Additionally, the Treasurer is instructed by State Code to initiate and conduct Real Estate Auctions, or Judicial Sales, for delinquent property taxes.
Assessments
Real Estate assessments are determined by the office of Real Estate Valuation each year based upon fair market value as of January 1st of that year. Assessing property is an involved process. Tax Relief
The Real Estate Tax Relief program for Roanoke County is administered by the Commissioner of Revenue. This program freezes Real Estate taxes for qualifying elderly or disabled homeowners within Roanoke County.
Setting Tax Rates
The Real Estate Tax Rate is set by the Board of Supervisors. This rate is typically set in March of each year during the completion of the County's budget just prior to April billing.
