  • Roanoke County has an online employment application. You can also visit the Human Resources department between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m, Monday through Friday, to complete an application in person. Applications are only accepted for posted open positions.

    Applicants may request reasonable accommodations throughout the hiring process such as:

    • Submitting an application for employment in an alternative format
    • Using a County-provided certified language interpreter to provide assistance
    • Requesting assistance through the use of auxiliary aids and services such as audio or video assistance devices

  • All vacant positions are posted in the Human Resources Department. Visit our Job Opportunities web page for a current listing of all open positions. Job postings are also available from all Roanoke County public libraries, and on cable TV Channel 3. Roanoke County advertises position openings in local newspapers and has a 24-hour Job Line: 540-772-2018, Option 2. 

    Job postings may also be publicized with community service organizations, including minority organizations, educational institutions, the Virginia Employment Commission and other locations. Job postings contain brief information, including application deadline date, salary range and minimum requirements.

  • After the application deadline, applications are forwarded to the appropriate department for screening and interviewing. Applicants chosen for an interview will be notified by the hiring department. Depending on the position, applicants may also be asked for further background information (i.e, DMV records). Hiring decisions are made by the appropriate Department Director or Supervisor. The Department contacts the selected applicant and completes the hiring process. 

    Hiring decisions for employment are sent to the Department of Human Resources. Applicants not interviewed or chosen for hire are notified by the Department of Human Resources when the position is filled.

  • Yes. For employment with the Police Department, Sheriff's Office, or Fire and Rescue Department, you will be required to complete and pass physical agility and written tests prior to a personal interview. For communications officer positions you will be required to complete and pass a written test prior to a personal interview. Additional selection criteria are listed with posted positions. Please review this information prior to applying for a public safety position.
