Project Overview

The goals of the project, where Dry Hollow Road and Dry Hollow Creek pass under the Norfolk Southern railroad bridge, are to:

  1. Reinforce the roadway against the creek; and
  2. Improve roadway safety.

December 3, 2025, Project Update

Over the next few months, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be installing traffic signals on both sides of the railroad bridge in advance of the larger road project that is anticipated to begin in late 2026/2027. Tree clearing and minor grading will take place in December, followed by test bores/holes at the traffic signal foundation locations. While this work will take place outside of the roadway, flagging will be needed at times to help manage traffic. These activities will allow for the signals to be installed in late Winter/early Spring 2026. The signals will be turned on when installation is complete in Spring 2026.

Project History

November 14, 2024

An open house-style meeting was held at Camp Roanoke to review updates for the Dry Hollow Road Safety Improvements project. The double box culvert project design shown at the October 2021 community meeting was changed because of the length of time the roadway would need to be closed to allow for construction. The new project design is simpler to construct, though it will result in clusters of nighttime roadway closures with the roadway open during the day. The current schedule anticipates construction occurring in 2027.

A total of 13 people attended the meeting to discuss the project with Roanoke County, Virginia Department of Transportation and AECOM staff.
