At the June 8, 2025, Board of Supervisors meeting, staff from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Salem District recognized Roanoke County as its “Locality of the Year,” presenting the award to the County’s Planning staff members in honor of their outstanding work. Dr. Raymond Smoot, Salem District representative on the Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board, attended to offer remarks praising the staff’s exceptional ability to plan, support, and manage projects that benefit the community.

VDOT Recognition

From VDOT’s Salem District: District Engineer Ken King, Resident Engineer Brian Blevins, and Planning & Investment Manager Anthony Ford. From Roanoke County's Planning staff: Assistant Director Megan Cronise, Principal Planner Isaac Henry, Transportation Planner Nathan Grim, Transportation Planner Summer Bork, Engineer Tyler Teer, Retired County Engineer David Henderson, and Intern Will King.

First Reading of Ordinances

The Board went on to hear the first reading of an ordinance to amend Articles I, II, III, IV and V of the Roanoke County Zoning Ordinance. The proposed amendments address changes regarding wireless communication facilities, broadcast towers, accessory apartments, mini-warehouses, temporary portable storage units, solar energy systems, and the official zoning map. The second reading of these proposed amendments is scheduled for July 22.

Consent Agenda

The Board of Supervisors approved the following measures in the form of one resolution under its Consent Agenda.

  • Approval of minutes – June 24, 2025;
  • Ordinance amending Chapter 8.1 (Erosion and Stormwater Management Program) of the Roanoke County Code, to incorporate new lot drainage requirements on site plans and plot plans. (Second Reading);
  • Ordinance authorizing the County Administrator to enter into a lease agreement with Ride Source to lease two (2) parking spaces at the General Services Building on Kessler Mill Drive. (Second Reading);
  • Ordinance authorizing the conveyance of a permanent utility easement and a temporary construction easement at 7415 Wood Haven Road to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for construction of the Valleypointe Parkway Realignment project, Hollins Magisterial District. (Second Reading);
  • Request to accept and allocate funds in the amount of $19,184.82 to the Clerk of the Circuit Court from the Commonwealth of Virginia for Technology Trust Funds.

Closed Session

The Board of Supervisors held a closed session per Section 2.2-3711(A)(1) of the Code of Virginia to conduct the annual performance evaluations of the County Administrator and County Attorney.
