During the 2020 Virginia General Assembly session, legislation was adopted providing Virginia Counties with taxing authority for cigarettes, pursuant to section 58.1-3830 of the State Code of Virginia. Subsequently, The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance on May 11, 2021 amending section 21 of the County Code, authorizing the County to begin issuing Cigarette Tax Revenue Stamps for the collection of cigarette taxes effective January 21, 2022. The adoptive tax rate was set at $0.0125 per cigarette, or .25 cents per pack.
If you are a cigarette retail store within Roanoke County, you are responsible for ensuring all inventory contains the County Tax Stamp on January 21, 2022. Wholesale distributors must purchase the necessary stamps directly from the Treasurer’s office. Please use the forms below to register and purchase the needed stamps.
