Safe Streets and Roads For All

Roanoke County, Botetourt County and the Town of Vinton are collaborating on a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan through the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program with the goal of preventing deaths and serious injuries for all roadway users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, commercial vehicle operators, transit riders and micromobility users.

Community meetings were held in each locality in April and May 2024 to review and comment on the high crash areas identified. A Roanoke County survey to provide feedback received 121 responses. Over 400 surveys in total were completed through the first round of community meetings to comment on high crash areas.

September 2024 community meetings provided recommendations on potential solutions for each high crash area to improve safety and reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roadways. A total of 113 Roanoke County surveys were submitted and almost 200 surveys were completed for all three localities.

A total of 16 people commented on the draft Comprehensive Safety Action Plan during the January 2025 review period.

On February 4, 2025, the Planning Commission held a public hearing and recommended adoption of the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. On February 25, 2025, the Board of Supervisors adopted the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan as part of the Roanoke County 200 Plan.
